My interest in 3D printing was born at the June 2019 Smoky Mountain Woodturners meeting. Brian Horais brought a Venus Box that he had made. He told us that he 3D printed the inside of the box and that one could get a good 3D printer for about $200. About a week later my Creality Ender 3 3D printer arrived.

I learned to print things and had my own Venus box to show at the next SMWTS meeting. But that was only the beginning. In practical no time I wanted to be able to design thing to print. I was not happy just being able to print things others had designed and made available on the Internet at websites like thingiverse.com.

After reading about and trying out several free programs for designing 3D models, I found OpenSCAD. I fell in love with OpenSCAD at first sight – well at first try anyway. Designing in OpenSCAD is much like writing a computer program. You write some “code”, push a button, and see what you just made. I taught computer programming for 38 years, so it was a natural for me. Maybe not so for you, but there are all kinds of design programs, all you have to do is find the one for you.

What I want 3D printing and Woodturning.com to be: 1. A place where I can warehouse my experience with 3D printing and woodturning. 2. A place where others can benefit from my experience, and use some of the things I have designed. 3. A place where others can learn about resources available for combining 3D printing and woodturning.
